A Comparison of Risk Exposure in Aquaculture and Agricultural Businesses AgEcon
Flaten, Ola; Lien, Gudbrand D.; Tveteras, Ragnar.
Agriculture and aquaculture have common features associated with their biological nature affecting risk exposure of the businesses. The aim of this paper is to compare risk exposure in salmon farming and agricultural enterprises in Norway by using an implicit error component model to examine the risk structure of yields, prices and economic returns at the farm level. Results indicate a higher farm-level year-to-year variability in yields, prices and economic returns in salmon farming than in agricultural enterprises. The variability in livestock enterprises was generally lower than for crop enterprises. Return on assets was highest in salmon farming with an average annual return of 9.2%. All of the agricultural farm types exhibited a negative average...

A financial analysis of the effect of the mix of crop and sheep enterprises on the risk profile of dryland farms in south-eastern Australia AgEcon
Hutchings, Timothy R.; Nordblom, Thomas L..
This study analyses the financial risk faced by representative mixed-enterprise farm businesses in four regions of south-eastern Australia. It uses discrete stochastic programming to optimise the ten-year cash flow margins produced by these farms, operating three alternative farming systems. Monte Carlo simulation analysis is used to produce a risk profile for each scenario, derived from multiple runs of this optimised model, randomised for commodity prices and decadal growing season rainfall since 1920. This analysis shows that the performance of the enterprise mixes at each site is characterised more by the level of variability of outcomes than by the mean values of financial outputs. It demonstrates that relying on mean values for climate and prices...

A high-resolution study of Holocene paleoclimatic and paleoceanographic changes in the Nordic Seas ArchiMer
Risebrobakken, B; Jansen, E; Andersson, C; Mjelde, E; Hevroy, K.
High-resolution records from IMAGES core MD95-2011 in the eastern Norwegian Sea provide evidence for relatively large- and small-scale high-latitude climate variability throughout the Holocene. During the early and mid-Holocene a situation possibly driven by consistent stronger westerlies increased the eastward influence of Arctic intermediate and near-surface waters. For the late Holocene a relaxation of the atmospheric forcing resulted in increased influence of Atlantic water. The main changes in Holocene climate show no obvious connection to changing solar irradiance, and spectral analysis reveals no consistent signature for any periodic behavior of Holocene climate at millennial or centennial timescales. There are, however, indications of consistent...

A mid-Holocene transition in the nitrogen dynamics of the western equatorial Pacific: Evidence of a deepening thermocline? ArchiMer
Kienast, M.; Lehmann, M. F.; Timmermann, A.; Galbraith, E.; Bolliet, T.; Holboum, A.; Normandeau, C.; Laj, C..
Sedimentary delta(15)N records from the oligotrophic western equatorial Pacific (WEP) off Mindanao show that late Holocene sedimentary delta(15)N is substantially lower than that of the early Holocene, following a gradual >3 parts per thousand decrease that occurred between 7 and 3 kyrs ago. Analyses of modem day nitrate isotope profiles from the same region indicate the sensitivity of the WEP N pools towards (1) the advection of (15)N-enriched nitrate from the Eastern Equatorial Pacific (EEP) by the North Equatorial Current (NEC) and the Mindanao Current in subsurface waters and, (2) at shallow depths, the input of new and (15)N-depleted nitrate through N, fixation. We suggest that the Holocene decrease in sedimentary delta(15)N reflects a diminished...

A review of Chorthippus species with angled pronotal lateral keels from Greece with special reference to transitional populations between some Peloponnesean taxa (Orthoptera, Acrididae) Naturalis
Willemse, F.; Helversen, O. von; Odé, B..
This paper presents a summary of the current knowledge on the systematics of the Greek taxa of Chorthippus, morphologically characterised by angled lateral pronotal keels (usually grouped as Glyptobothrus). Prior to this paper, based on traditional morphology, ten taxa of Chorthippus with angled lateral pronotal keels were recognized from Greece. Based on morphology as well as (and more importantly so) bioacoustics thirteen Greek taxa are now recognised. With addition of a few additional related taxa that occur only outside Greece, all are treated in this paper: Chorthippus apricarius apricarius (Linnaeus, 1758), C. vagans vagans (Eversmann, 1848) (not in Greece), C. v. cypriotus (Uvarov, 1936) stat. nov. [Cyprus], C. v. africanus Nadig, 1981 [N. Africa],...

A revision of Choleva agilis (Illiger, 1798) and related species (Coleoptera: Staphylinoidea: Cholevidae) Naturalis
Schilthuizen, M..
The Choleva agilis-group is revised. The three species are redescribed and their zoogeography is discussed. The phylogeny of the three species is hypothesized. Choleva jailensis Jeannel, 1923 and C. agilis clermonti van der Wiel, 1931 are new synonyms of C. agilis (Illiger, 1798). C. lederiana var. brevicollis Krogerus, 1926, is a new synonym of C. lederiana Reitter, 1901. The cavernicolous taxon gracilenta Szymczakowski, 1957, formerly regarded as a subspecies of C. lederiana, is transferred to C. septentrionis Jeannel, 1923.

A revision of the polytypic Albinaria hippolyti (Boettger, 1878) from Crete (Gastropoda Pulmonata: Clausiliidae) Naturalis
Schilthuizen, M.; Welter-Schultes, F.W.; Wiese, V..
On the basis of both detailed distributional field studies and morphological analyses, a revision of the polytypic species Albinaria hippolyti from Central and Eastern Crete is presented. True subspecies are distinguished from mere geographic varieties by the presence of narrow hybrid zones. Using this criterion, four adjoining subspecies are recognised: A. h. hippolyti (Boettger, 1878), A. h. aphrodite (Boettger, 1883), A. h. holtzi (Sturany, 1904) and A. h. harmonia subspec. nov. Additionally, two geographically isolated and conchologically distinctive forms are also treated as subspecies: A. h. arthuriana (Boettger, 1878) and A. h. asterousea subspec. nov. The geographical distribution and variability of each subspecies is described in detail. A. h....

Agronomic performance and genetic dissimilarity among cherry tomato genotypes Horticultura Brasileira
Maciel,Gabriel M; Finzi,Rafael R; Carvalho,Fábio J; Marquez,Guilherme R; Clemente,Andressa A.
ABSTRACT The genotypes evaluation in a germplasm bank is essential to determine their commercial or usefulness, as potential parents, in a breeding program. We aimed to detect the genetic diversity of 42 tomato genotypes of cherry type, belonging to the germplasm bank of the Federal University of Uberlândia and, also evaluate their behavior. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse in randomized block design with 42 treatments and two replications. Ten quantitative traits of agronomic importance were evaluated. The genetic divergence was obtained by multivariate analysis, using the Mahalanobis distance with different clustering methods (UPGMA and Tocher). The hybrids performance was compared by Scott-Knott (p= 0.05) and Dunnett’s test (p= 0.05). UPGMA...

Bifurcation of the subtropical south equatorial current against New Caledonia in December 2004 from a hydrographic inverse box model ArchiMer
Ganachaud, Alexandre; Gourdeau, Lionel; Kessler, William.
The South Equatorial Current (SEC), the westward branch of the South Pacific subtropical gyre, extends from the equator to 30 degrees S at depth. Linear ocean dynamics predict that the SEC forms boundary currents on the eastern coasts of the South Pacific islands it encounters. Those currents would then detach at the northern and southern tips of the islands, and cross the Coral Sea in the form of jets. The Fiji Islands, the Vanuatu archipelago, and New Caledonia are the major topographic obstacles on the SEC pathway to the Australian coast. Large-scale numerical studies, as well as climatologies, suggest the formation of three jets in their lee: the north Vanuatu jet (NVJ), the north Caledonian jet (NCJ), and the south Caledonian jet (SCJ), implying a...

Characterization of lulo ( Solanum quitoense Lam.) genetic diversity in the department of Boyaca, Colombia Acta Agron. (Palmira)
Morillo-Coronado,Ana Cruz; Tovar-León,Yeily Paola; Morillo-Coronado,Yacenia.
Abstract Lulo (Solanum quitoense Lam.) is an exotic fruit with major economic importance in the Andean region. It has gained importance in the agricultural sector due to organoleptic and cultivation characteristics. There are not studies on this plant genetic resource in the province of Neira, Boyaca department, Colombia. Given these concerns, the aim of this research was to characterize the genetic diversity with random amplified microsatellite markers (RAM). Twenty-one S. quitoense materials were collected in the Soaquira and Sacaneca, Boyaca-Colombia districts to calculate genetic diversity and similarity indices. In addition, the analysis with the Nei-Li coefficient formed three groups at 0.60 similarity level showing a loose distribution of the...

Characterization of selection effects on broiler lines using DNA fingerprinting Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Schmidt,GS; Hellmeister Filho,P; Zanella,EL.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of selection for body weight on the genetic variability and diversity in broiler lines. Two paternal broiler lines (LL and LLc) were used. LL line was selected for 12 generations for growth and carcass and reproduction characteristics. The LLc line was established from LL line in 1985 and mated at random. Blood samples from six chickens per line were collected and used for molecular analysis. Also, a DNA pool was made for each line to compare effects between lines. Data were analyzed considering the collected information on the presence or absence of DNA bands. Band sharing scores were calculated using the DICE coefficient. The pattern of the 21 most representative bands was used. DNA fingerprinting...

Characterization of trees, fruits and genetic diversity in natural populations of mangaba Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Silva,Ana Veruska Cruz da; Amorim,Julie Anne Espíndola; Vitória,Marina Ferreira da; Ledo,Ana da Silva; Rabbani,Allivia Rouse Carregosa.
ABSTRACT The state of Sergipe is the largest mangaba producer, which is a fruit native to Brazil, and has cultural, social and economic importance in its area of occurrence. It is an endangered species due to human actions, and despite its economic potential, there are still no commercial plantations. The study was carried out in order to characterize trees, fruits and the genetic diversity of natural populations of mangaba in Sergipe, Brazil. Fruits from Abaís Beach/Estância (AB) presented, on average, twice the vitamin C content (414.81 mg of vit. C/100g), when compared with the others. The use of ISSR primers was efficient in estimating the genetic similarity of populations. The primers clustered the populations of mangaba according to their origin,...

Classification of the coefficient of variation to variables in beef cattle experiments Ciência Rural
Vaz,Marcos André Braz; Pacheco,Paulo Santana; Seidel,Enio Júnior; Ansuj,Angela Pellegrin.
ABSTRACT: This research was conducted to propose a classification of the coefficient of variation (CV%) in many categories of variables of production and carcass of beef cattle experiments. The data was collected from theses and dissertations. We used the methods of classification considering mean and standard deviation, and considering median and pseudo-sigma. The two methods showed similar results so both can be used to classify CV%. We propose only three categories to rank CV%: low, medium and high.
